India painting for The Gallery at Duncan Yard

After a month of holidays and getting the kids back to school I have been dying to start my first painting of 2009.
Cecily at The Gallery at Duncan Yard invited me to take part in their group exhibition next month, just the inspiration I was looking for. The theme is "With love from India".
At first I was unsure where to start. I had all these weird and colourfull images in my head but after much thought and consideration I came up with the following painting.
This is going back to my roots as a crafter. I used gold leaf, decoupage and photo transfers as a base and then painted the lotus flowers in oils and aged the whole painting with burnt sienna.
I am very happy with the end result and think it does capture a romantic image of India.
With the creative juices flowing I am planning on doing 6 paintings for the exhibition which starts in 2 weeks!!

India 1
Original oil on board 30x30cm

Wow! this is really a work of art. I'm impressed. Not using the typical 'screaming' Indian colours is a good idea if you go for the broader SA market. All the best with the exhibition.

God bless

I wish I had another word more expressive than "wow" but WOW! I love the lotus blossom and Indian dancing. This rocks! Beautiful.

Hi TigerL
Dids

Hi Deirdre! Your India painting is lovely! I really enjoy your blog- thank you for sharing the photos of your vacation. This is a place some of us may never get to see in our lifetime! I look forward to seeing more of your work over on DSFDF. -Tom

Hi Tom. Yes, South Africa is an amazing place to live with a such a diverse number of cultures. It is also very beautifull. Strange that we always want to travel overseas when we have it all right here, amazing coastline along 3/4 of our border, mountains, deserts, game reserves etc. Happy paiting on your side of the world. Will keep an eye on your blog.
